124th Argentine Open HSBC Polo Championship Begins

Alegría lead the Zone B rankings

On Saturday 4 November, the first matches in the 124th Argentine Open HSBC Polo Championship were played on the grounds at Palermo, Buenos Aires. A total of 10 teams are taking part in this year’s tournament with players hailing from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Spain, South Africa and Uruguay.

La Irenita and La Esquina were the first to take to Ground 2 for the Zone A qualifiers. The initial favour fell into La Irenita’s hands, but as the half-time bell went, La Esquina tried their best to fight back. The score was 14-11 at the end of the match in La Irenita’s favour, with it 150 points in the rankings.
La Aguada Las Monjitas were next to take to the Ground for their match against La Albertina Abu Dhabi. La Albertina were absolutely overwhelmed by the might of the Novillo Astrada’s team losing 13-10 at the final bell.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the next day, play continued in the Zone B qualifiers. In the first match of the day, Cría Yatay beat Chapaleufú 18-8 on Ground 2, as brothers Eduardo and Alberto Heguy took to the Palermo grounds to compete for the Open once again. Chapaleufú began the match with fervour, but Cría Yatay broke away quickly, with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first chukka. This strength was to continue for the rest of the match, despite strong play from the Chapaleufú team. On Ground 1, Alegría Land Rover beat La Dolfina Polo Ranch 17-12 to up their tournament points to 650. The boys in pink began the match with extemely strong play, reaching a 5-0 lead by the end of the second chukka. But, La Dolfina Polo Ranch pushed back with a vengeance, as Diego Cavanagh scored goal after goal to bring the scores closer. Sapo Caset and Facundo Sola changed positions, to shake-up the play, helping Alegría to win this important victory, placing them at the top of the rankings this early on in the tournament. In contrast, Cría Yatay have scored 350 points thus far, La Dolfina Polo Ranch 100 and Chapaleufú are yet to achieve any.
The next matches wil take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November and will be scheduled as follows:
Saturday 11 November
2pm: La Dolfina vs Las Esquina Los Machitos
4.30pm: La Aguada Las Monjitas vs La Irenita
Sunday 12 November
2pm: Ellerstina vs Chapaleufú
4.30pm: Alegría vs Cría Yatay
