New Product Release - Gift Pack of Gins

We are so chuffed to have been able to release our much fabled miniature gin gift pack. The gift packs themselves are all soft touch laminated, silver foil blocked and hold a detailed description of the respective gins. All four of our gins - Botanical Gin, London Dry Gin, Strawberry & Rose Gin and Sloe Gin Liqueur - are included in perfectly miniaturised form to deliver a true flavour of what we are all about, delivering reliably delicious organic gins.

Retailing at £25 these are the perfect introduction to our stable of organic gins.

These packs have been an incredibly long time coming, namely owing to the extraordinary lead time on packaging precipitated by Covid which moved the lead times from three weeks to over sixteen weeks. Primed to print in October 2020, now facing a delivery slot of January 2021, we decided to postpone release to Winter 2021. It does appear that extending the release date has worked out as the miniature gin gift packs have flown off the shelves this year!

La Natividad Win Argentine Open

Cambiaso’s winning streak thwarted

On Saturday 11 December, history was made in Palermo as youth triumphed over experience in The 128th HSBC Argentine Open Final between La Natividad and La Dolfina Saudi. Going into the Final, the teams were poles apart in Argentine Open Final experience, with La Natividad entering their first ever Argentine Open Final, while for La Dolfina it was their 21st Final out of 22 in the team’s history (it was only in 2004 that La Dolfina did not feature in The Argentine Open Final), with 14 wins and seven losses over that time. meanwhile the individual player statistics were similarly stark, with Adolfo Cambiaso holding 17 titles and Pelon Stirling nine, while the La Natividad players had each yet to claim the illustrious title.

With a sensational game by Barto, author of six goals, the effectiveness of his brother Jeta in the execution of fouls (the tournament's top scorer), the solidity of Nachi Du Plessis and the strength of Polito Pieres, La Natividad achieved a sensational triumph that will remain in the history of polo after breaking La Dolfina Saudi’s eight year winning streak. 2021 has been an unusual year for La Dolfina as they have not achieved a single Triple Crown title, with La Natividad winning The Hurlingham Open and Argentine Open and Ellerstina securing The Tortugas Open.

It is therefore little surprise to see Jeta, Barto and Polito all raised to 10 goals, read more about this below.

La Natividad add names to history books

History was made on Saturday 6 November, as La Natividad defeated RS Murus Sanctus 14-8 and secured the team’s first ever Triple Crown title. This was also the first Triple Crown title for the Castagnola brothers, Jeta and Barto and team mate Ignatius du Plessi, as well as being the first Argentine Triple Crown title for 13 years and 38 Finals not to feature either La Dolfina or Ellerstina; this was Polito Pieres’ fourth Hurlingham Open title, having won in 2016, 2017 and 2018 with Ellerstina.

La Natividad had an excellent Final from the offset, always managing to maintain a few goals in advantage and limiting the effectiveness of RS Murus Sanctus’ 10 goal powerhouse, Juan Martín Nero, which meant that over four chukkas Nero was not able to convert goals nor capitalise on fouling opportunities. This combined with the unstoppable forward power or Jeta Castagnola and Pieres, the solid backdoor of du Plessis and Barto Castagnola scoring an impressive nine goals, saw La Natividad secure the title, much to the delight of the onlooking supporters, family and friends who have been aiming for these heights for many years.

Barto Castagnola was the tournament top scorer, with 31 goals; Pieres was named Most Valuable Player; Open Voina (Ellerstina Pícaro x Grappa Gallera), played by Pablo Pieres, was the Daniel Kearney Cup Best Playing Pony; Monkey Puzzle (Osh Kosh x Cheeky Monkey SPC), played by Pablo Pieres, was the AAP’s Best Playing Pony and Latia Ramona (Open Cabernet x Future Rayuela), played by Barto Castagnola, was the Best Polo Argentino Bred.

On an interesting side note, Monkey Puzzle – the Daniel Kearney Cup Best Playing Pony – was chosen as the Polo Times Best Playing Pony at The Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy at Guards Polo Club in June 2019!

England Polo Team Narrowly Miss Out

England put on strong show

Following on from their win earlier in the weekend in The Churchill-Roosevelt Cup at New Bridge Polo & Country Club in Aiken, South Carolina, the USA’s dominance over England continued in The Townsend Cup on Sunday 10 October, adding their country’s name to the title for the eighth year.

The pressure was on for the home team, as defending champions and with seven wins under their belt to England’s one, there was a lot resting on the outcome of the international match. USA Team Captain Pelon Escapite opened the scoring, with England’s Ormerod brothers swiftly replying with goals of their own, they continued to work in tandem throughout the match, however by half-time USA had gained a two goal advantage, 10-8.

For the second half, USA team coach, Tiger Kneece, implemented a new strategy to alter the pace of play, but England were unwilling to backdown and continued to battle on and by the start of the final chukka, the home team led by just one goal. However, time was not on the visitors’ side and USA ran out the winners, 18-15, to chants of “U-S-A”. Geronimo Obregon commented post-match, “Man, they’re rough! England is always rough. My experience playing against them is always intense. It’s tough to go around them and you’ve got to go through them, it’s hard. They’re competitive.”

Pelon Escapite was named Most Valuable Player, scoring a total of eight goals and Best Playing Pony was awarded to Samurai, a 13-year-old Mexican Thoroughbred played by Eden Ormerod and owned by Liv Berube.

British Polo Organic Botanical Gin (2018) :

The balance however marks it out for universal purpose - it would take olives or fruity garnishes, a great palette for imaginative flavours despite the rock pool note. Wonderfully bright with tonic - almost perfectly complemented by the Fever tree. Some judges felt this gin warranted more confidence than the 'trendy' description suggests and you should be bolder in your selling point - it simply tastes great!

2-stars:

British Polo Double Spiced Rum (2021):

Clear and bright, dark, golden amber. Strong ethanol on the nose and a full-on punch of warming exotic spice notes, ginger and orange to the fore. Very inviting and appealing. A truly heart-warming delivery of vanilla, orange peel , and finely judged cinnamon on a vanilla/molasses base. The rum gives a lovely sense of rich, rounded flavour explosion and development with a clean, lingering finish of sweet vanilla and burnt sugar. Absolutely delicious.

British Polo Sloe Gin Liqueur (2021):

An interesting take on sloe gin, and one clearly for lovers of spice. While not to everyone's taste, we can't deny the quality and balance here, given that you set out to create a spiced sloe gin rather than one that relies on cracked stones to deliver almondy notes. The sweet ness of the liqueur is apt, matching and softening the spirit's heat well - surprising, given the reduction of sugar. The spices are all complementary to the fruit, and work well with the intrinsic aromatics of the gin. A very well considered and crafted sloe gin, a sidestep from the standard and one that will be enjoyed as much for its finesse as its flavour profile.

1-star:

British Polo Organic Classic London Dry Gin (2020):

Certainly a tin with a twist - there's a dramatic herbal note on the nose, largely reminiscent of coriander (herb) but with complexity. Juniper is, however, amply present, as it should be. Sweet appeal on the first sip, perhaps deceptive, as a grip of both alcohol and aromatics follow, with a medley of flavours developing gently on the palate

How did it make you feel when Covid-19 changes/lockdown came into place? (relatable for other business owners)

Whilst I could, and still do, appreciate and endorse the reasons why lockdown came in to place on 23 March, when lockdown was announced in the UK it did feel like we were all living through some strange Orwellian reality tv. I remember walking through the decimated shopping aisles in the Barnwood Sainsbury’s and saying to my mum that a new world order was beginning. Looking back on things two months later, this prophesy does look to have, in many ways, been fulfilled.

A large part of British Polo Gin’s business model is running hospitality events across the country and to have all 150 dates from this summer’s schedule wiped out virtually over night was galling. The other side our business is focused on supplying the on trade with our award-winning 100% organic gin. With lockdown and the forced closure of pubs, clubs, restaurants and public gatherings announced on 23 March, a significant proportion of our projected revenue dried up literally overnight. It was as if a tap had been turned off.

Similarly, I am one of the owners and licensee at British Polo Gin’s stablemate, The Polo Pub at Foston’s Ash . On 17 March, the UK government advised people to “avoid” hospitality outlets and to not undergo non-essential travel. We were therefore left in a moral maze of not wanting to shut as we wanted to support our clientele and staff, whilst at the same time not wishing to put anyone at potential risk. Our locals wanted us to stay open – in fact, right up to Boris’ speech announcing lockdown on 23 March, we had locals drinking at the bar, but it was in a way a relief when we were told to close on 23 March having limped along since 17 March when the government effectively advised against going to pubs.

What activities have you been doing in your business? What has changed and what remains the same?

As I mentioned above, the events and on trade side to our business was shut off overnight on 23 March. Hopefully, this metaphorical tap will turn back on again as quickly as it turned off once we get the green light from Westminster.

I am however always keen to look for a silver lining and I am delighted to confirm that in the past few months I have noticed a really positive change whereby both the public and business seem to positively look for ways to engage themselves locally and support independent SMEs.

To this end, we have enjoyed a big upturn in sales to farm shops, delis, and wine merchants across the country. Similarly, our online sales are up circa 400% which I think is in-line with other businesses who have an online presence. We are hugely grateful for this.

We have also continued to work on pipeline projects as I am confident that normality (albeit with a few tweaks) will return soon. As such, I am delighted to confirm that we will shortly be producing a bespoke limited edition run of our 100% organic botanical gin in partnership with The Royal Agricultural University to celebrate their 175th anniversary year.

How have you been contributing towards the fight against the virus?

We have been producing hand sanitiser for the local NHS, care network and private sector for over two months now. The sanitiser is produced to The World Health Organisation Formulation 1 which is at a minimum abv of 80%. It is great to be supplying at this strength because it is 10% higher than the minimum recommended abv of 70%.

At the distillery, we are able to physically produce the key raw material, ethanol, so we have been able to maintain and to a large extent, guarantee supply to key partners for the duration of the crisis.

Launching a new product would usually take months so it was amazing to witness how quickly everyone in our supply chain galvanised to make the project happen. There seemed to be a tangible feeling that no request was too marginal or trivial and that we were all pulling together in the same direction to help the collective national effort.

The main thing to take away from this crisis is that if everyone, public and business alike, works together in symbiosis then even the most daunting of obstacles can be tackled.

What’s your outlook for the future

As mentioned above, the landscape will be different in a “post covid” world. But with furlough provision looking after staff, government-backed competitive finance being made available to business and a collective drive to work together reinstalled across the country, we are in a strong place to bounce back

To borrow the words of Captain Tom Moore, no matter what happens today, “Tomorrow will be a good day”.

British women enjoy handicap raises across the pond

USPA Women’s Handicap Changes

As well as announcing the mixed handicap changes, the USPA has also announced their 2020 Women’s Outdoor Handicap Changes.

The UK’s top female players have done well with Izzy Parsons’ handicap raised from 7 to 8 goals (effective from 1 June), Lottie Lamacraft has been raised from 6 to 7 goals (effective from 1 June) and Milly Hine, Rich's cousin, has gone from 5 to 6 goals.

Aside from our homegrown talents, other top changes include Lia Salvo raised from 8 to 9, Mia Novillo Astrada and Clara Cassino from 7 to 8, while Maddie Grant and Audry Persano have seen their handicaps increase from 4 to 5 goals. 2020 UK High Goal & Victor Ludorum Fixtures

HPA & Guards announce amended dates

The Hurlingham Polo Association and Guards Polo Club have announced amended dates for the 2020 Victor Ludorum series, The Cartier Queen’s Cup and The Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup.

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) are also amending their tournament fixture list for this season, which remains dependent on any Government conditions regarding Coronavirus and will not alter the HPA’s policy of providing a month’s warning for tournament polo.

The HPA has published a revised draft for their 2020 Victor Ludorum tournaments (8 goals and above), while the 6 and 4 goal Victrix Ludorum are still being reviewed. The Prince of Wales and Trippetts 22 goal tournaments will begin the UK high goal season, but The Cartier Queen’s Cup and King Power Gold Cup have swapped positions with The King Power Gold Cup being played first (23 June – 19 July), followed by The Warwickshire (18 – 26 July) with The Cartier Queen’s Cup being played last (28 July – 23 August).

Nick Wiles, HPA Chairman, commented “In this unprecedented situation we are all working closely together, here in UK and internationally. Representatives of the Argentine Polo Association, Hurlingham Polo Association, United States Polo Association, French Polo Federation, Spanish Polo Federation and the Federation of International Polo recently met by conference call and all agreed to work together in order to help all associations to have the best possible polo season, while minimizing the effects of the pandemic and prioritizing the health and safety of the players, umpires, grooms and everyone who helps put on polo events. Further digital meetings will be held regularly. As the season progresses we will hopefully have more freedom but that is likely to be still limited. The holiday month of August is going to look different this year so it is a great opportunity to play and hopefully watch some top class polo here through August and September in what is usually our best weather. Playing our key tournaments and enabling polo to be played nationally for a worthwhile period of time will help to maintain the fabric of our sport and those who are reliant on it for either their livelihood or recreation”.

Similarly, Guards Polo Club are currently compiling a new fixture list for the 2020 season, with their aim to start playing polo in mid-May, probably behind closed doors, with the Polo Office adjusting as and when the situation alters. The Club aims to provide polo across all levels and will continue playing until early October. The Cartier Queen’s Cup, one of the most prestigious polo titles in the UK which this year is celebrating its 60th anniversary, is usually played for in June, but due to the ongoing pandemic and lockdown restrictions, this year’s tournament will be played from Tuesday 28 July – Sunday 23 August. The Club has also moved The Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup, which will now be played from 11 – 30 August, with the Final being played one week after The Cartier Queen’s Cup, as is traditional, but on the same day as the Club’s high goal ladies Final which will ensure a weekend of thrilling polo for spectators.

Addressing the white elephant in the room, Coronavirus has obviously adversely affected British Polo Gin… but equally, it is the same for every other business and household in the land. Put plainly, we are all in the same boat but if we pull together, we will beat it!

Whilst we are of course, still able to produce our multi award winning 100% organic gins safely, the market place has changed, albeit temporarily for our company.

This is owing in the main to the decision made on Friday 20 March for all "on trade sites", (where our gin is consumed on a premises), to close at the behest of the UK's government. We had also been due to exhibit and run bars at dozens of events across the UK which have now been cancelled or postponed owing to social distancing.

However, ultimately the health of the people of the United Kingdom and, more widely, the world, is of utmost importance so we do understand the rationale behind the Government's measures.

British Polo Gin is in fact based at The Foston's Ash Inn , where Rich our founder is also the landlord, so we do understand the monumental impact that social distancing and the enforced closure of "On Trade" sites has had on both the British economy and British people.

The good news story is that we have secured delivery channels to make sure that "Off Trade" sites (where gin is bought to be consumed at home) continue to be supplied with our delicious gin. UK Arena Polo End of Season Handicaps

Arena Handicaps 2019/2020 announced by HPA

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) has released the list of end of season arena handicap changes 2019/2020.
Amongst those on the list, Irish International Niall Donnelly and German number one Patrick Maleitzke have seen their handicaps rise from 5 to 6 goals, as well as Cuvée 450 Arena Gold Cup winning Marcus Cork, who has seen his handicap rise from 3 to 4 goals. Elsewhere across the spectrum, there has been a great number of young players see their handicaps rise, from The Ladies British Open winner Saskia Meadows (2 to 3 goals) to Irish young gun Evan Powers (2 to 3 goals).

But, most surprising of all are those who have seen their handicaps decrease. At the top of the list, Jonny Good will see his handicap fall from 8 to 7 goals, whilst Sebastian Dawnay will play off 6 goals in future. Furthermore, Harold Hodges has seen his handicap fall by a goal to 5, as has Royston Prisk, who will now play off 3 goals.

UAE Polo Team Win in Dubai

The Standard Chartered Gold Cup 2020

On Friday 6 March, The Standard Chartered Gold Cup 2020 came to an end at Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club in Dubai, with UAE Polo declared the two-time champions. The team, led by patron Sheika Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, played in front of a record crowd, against Final rivals Am – UAE Polo, a team making its high goal debut this year. AM – UAE Polo were strong from the off, taking control of the first chukka, but UAE Polo’s Panelo brothers, Benjamin and Tomás, fought back in the second, ultimately tying the match 5-5 at the end of the third. In the fourth, AM – UAE Polo took the lead again, but UAE Polo made a comeback with goals from Brit Tommy Beresford, who put their team 8-6 ahead with one chukka remaining.
Beresford, on fire for UAE Polo, scored a 60 yard penalty to put his team ahead, 9-6. AM – UAE Polo didn’t give up, scoring another two goals, but a final goal from UAE Polo secured the victory and the title. AM – UAE Polo’s Jacinto Crotto was named Most Valuable Player, whilst Nobu, a Thoroughbred played by Tomás Panelo was awarded the Best Playing Pony honours.

Cuvée 450 Arena Gold Cup

On Saturday 29 February, arena polo fans gathered in their droves at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club for the thrilling Final of The Cuvée 450 Arena Gold Cup.
Saturday’s Final was between the German powerhouse team Schockemöhle Polo Stud and RCBPC regulars, Regal Warriors.
From the off, it was a fast and furious match with powerful plays between the two strongest players on the sand, Regal Warrior’s 10 goal Max Charlton and Schockemöhle Polo Stud’s Patrick Maleitzke. At half-time, Regal Warriors had the lead 13-9, thanks in part to exceedingly strong play from Charlton’s teammate Marcus Cork, but it was the second half when Cork, later named the British Polo Gin Most Valuable Player, really came into his own, riding circles around his higher handicapped opponents. The fourth and final chukka saw Schockemöhle Polo Stud’s Clement Delfosse in heightened defence, battling furiously against the blue shirts of Regal Warriors, but as the chukka, and thus the Final ended, Regal Warriors rode away the 2020 victors, 22-18. Vida, played by Patrick Maleitzke and owned by Los Machitos, was named the Polo Times Best Playing Pony. In The Silver Cup Final, Cuvée 450 defeated Ojo Caliente 18-16.

Las Monjitas Win C.V. Whitney Cup

Narrow win for iconic team

In front of thousands of spectators on Sunday 23 February, Las Monjitas defeated La Indiana 11-10 to win The C.V. Whitney Cup, the first title in The 2020 Gauntlet of Polo, and with it, the first place $100,000 prize money.
Now in its second year, last year’s tournament saw Las Monjitas make it to the Final, but lose out to ultimate winners Pilot, so this year, they clearly meant business. Leading from the off with a converted penalty 3, Las Monjitas played well with La Indiana close on their heels throughout. Going into half-time, the teams were even at 4-4, but as the second half prevailed, Las Monjitas extended their lead. Fran Elizalde and David ‘Pelón’ Stirling used all their might to secure four goals to none in response from La Indiana and with two missed penalty attempts from the La Indiana side, the Las Monjitas lead left much to be reckoned with. In the final chukka, with Las Monjitas leading by five goals, the deal looked sealed for the boys in orange, but La Indiana hadn’t quit just yet. After receiving a penalty 1, Santiago Gómez Romero and teammate Polito Pieres scored back-to-back goals, ultimately securing a four goal run, with the clock firmly on Las Monjitas’ side it wound down to an 11-10 victory. Fran Elizalde was named Most Valuable Player, whilst his pony Monlinera was awarded the Best Playing Pony rug.

Polo Times is delighted to confirm the new format of a Test series in 2020 for the Frasers England polo team. Comprising of three polo matches in the Test series, rather than a one-off fixture, the opposing teams will be afforded all the benefits that are associated with playing together consecutively, rather than just once. The venues will also change, with Beaufort Polo Club being the first to be confirmed in the series, on Sunday 7 June 2020. This change in venues will, of course, not only present the teams with playing on different grounds and surfaces, but it will also open up polo and the Frasers England polo team, to a much wider audience.

An HPA spokesman commented, “After several months of planning, we are very pleased to announce that we are in final talks with the Pakistan Polo Association with the intention of putting together a three match Test series for Frasers England to play against Pakistan this summer. This is a fresh look for England polo and it is hoped that this new format will increase opportunities for HPA members and the general public to see an England team play in what promises to be a very competitive series. As a result, The Coronation Cup has been put on hold, but it is planned that it will continue to be played by THE England polo team against a national team of similar handicap in future years.

“Polo in the Park is now attended by a huge number of spectators and this year, a Frasers England team will play in that ‘arena-like’ format on the Friday and a Frasers Women’s team will also play on the Saturday, hopefully both against the USA. With an extended list of international fixtures in 2020 there will be more opportunities to play in and watch an England team this year.

“For the Coronation Cup, it was always going to be a challenge to move it from its long-established venue at Guards. The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club were brave enough to take on that challenge and despite their best efforts to recreate the glory days, it has become apparent that the face of International polo has changed and those changes need adapting to. The HPA are incredibly grateful to the team at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club for their investment in both time and resources in staging and running the last two International Days.”

At British Polo Gin we love working with and promoting the best of British brands. From our establishment in 2016 we have found our involvement at leading polo clubs, tradeshows and sporting events has given us the perfect platform to both identify and showcase leading companies from our bars across the country. Provenance, quality and integrity are always key tenets when choosing which producers we would like to partner with.

As we now approach our fourth year of events operations we are thrilled to be working with a wide range of producers, including Two Farmers Crips – pioneers of the first biodegradable crisp packet –, Wood Brothers Distillery – distillers of fantastic single estate English vodka – and Wheat Straws – producers of 100% biodegradable strays made from wheat –, to name but a few.

Similarly, we love working with leading British events. In 2019 we were thrilled to run bars at fantastically British events including, The Cotswold International Polo Day, Osberton International Horse Trials, The Rundle Cup and in The Walled Garden at Burghley Boutique for the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Burghley Horse Trials Therefore when Laura Audley, founder of the epic Burghley Boutique and Portobello Tents , gave us the opportunity to run the bar at Portobello Farm, pop luxury camping for Glastonbury Festival , we were of course delighted.

British Polo Gin will be based in the onsite Tack Room from which we will run our fully stocked farmyard local. Our friendly bar tenders will be offering bespoke cocktails, craft beers, fizz, epic wines, our 100% organic gin and some delicious bar snacks for you to enjoy. There will also be a takeaway service so that you can enjoy your drinks en route to the festival itself. Our favourite takeaway offerings for this year include a crisp can of premium wine from Nice Drinks or a can of tasty organic lager from our mates at Stroud Brewery.

The Tack Room will also double up as on-site restaurant where delicious locally sourced food will be available all day to keep guests well fuelled to dance the night away with Paul and Taylor down on the festival site itself.

Accommodation will be arranged in The Paddock and is provided in Bronze, Silver and Gold packages in Laura’s signature Bell Tents whilst a VIP option is additionally available in the super swanky Lotus Belle Tents. It’s a short complimentary shuttle to and from the festival to save those disco legs!

Having danced the night away, Bloody Drinks bloody mary in hand, you will be able to saunter over to The Barns where you can have a hot shower, blow dry, deep tissue massage and well and truly press the human reset button. Having relaxed, refreshed and recharged we recommend you then head over to The Field where you will be able to take in the festival vista safe from a steaming hot tub before tackling the festival crowds once more.

Each year, hundreds of students gather at Rugby Polo Club for the epitome of the university season, The SUPA University Winter National Championships. Between 6 – 9 February, 202 teams competed in weather from all four seasons across 26 leagues for the coveted silverware. Nottingham were the overall winners, picking up four division titles: Novice 1, Novice 2, Novice 3 and Novice 4 Blue, but every university had impressive turn out, with numbers once again up this year.

The Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Corita, a lovely bay mare, owned by Druids Lodge Polo Club, who played her heart out over the four days. This year’s Most Valuable Player, awarded a delicious bottle of our British Polo Gin Sloe Gin , was Abby Grant from St Andrews University, whilst Cameron Bee was named Most Improved Player, and earned himself a pair of new kneepads, courtesy of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers.

Farrington Secure Extra Time RCBPC Win

The HPA Winter Victor Ludorum Final

With the sun shining, but a harsh wind blowing through the arena at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, The HPA Winter Victor Ludorum Final saw two skilled teams come together to battle for the coveted national title yesterday, Sunday 2 February. Yaroslav Chichvarkin’s Hedonism Wines (playing instead of his injured father Evgeny), a regular in these fixtures, came up against Louisa Watt’s Farrington in the 8 goal Final, in front of a bevy of arena polo fans.
The first chukka began slow and steady, with both teams eyeing each other up and identifying the potential weak links in their play. But, with a 25 yard penalty it was Hedonism Wines who found the posts first, with Brit Royston Prisk, solid in defence, finding fire at the end of this stick, securing eight goals before the bell to end the chukka. With another goal for Hedonism Wines from number two Marcus Cork at the beginning of the second chukka, Farrington looked like they were in for a hard slog to the finish, put three penalty ones but them back in contention, 9-3. Irishman Evan Powers, was the tonic the Farrington side needed, as he secured three goals for his side, with another five following off teammate Ed Banner-Eve’s stick. So, going into half-time, Hedonism Wines’ early, extensive lead, was no longer, with Farrington trailing by just one goal, 12-11.
The strong wind was making all the difference to these two sides, with the advantage clear when the teams changed ends, but it was Prisk who once again took control going into the second half. A thirteenth goal for his side once again extended their lead, but Banner-Eve wasn’t far behind. The teams drew for the first time, 13-13, and each time Hedonism Wines put themselves ahead Farrington were not far behind. It wasn’t until the final 13 seconds of the match, with the teams at 20-20, that it looked as though Farrington might get the upper hand. With a centre hit, Banner-Eve, fired the ball up the arena, but the clock had other ideas, thus the teams found themselves in an extra chukka. As the fifth chukka ensued, Farrington was the first team to foul, but Prisk was unable to put pen to paper, with the wind working tirelessly against him, and with the polo fates falling in Farrington’s favour, a penalty one was what signed on the dotted line for a Farrington win, 21-20.
The teams were presented with their prizes in front of their friends and family, with The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player honours going quite rightly to Hedonism Wines’ Royston Prisk. The Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Daisy, a bay mare owned by Adolfo Casabal and played by Ed Banner-Eve.

The Bryan Morrison Trophy is Postponed

The International Test Match for The Bryan Morrison Trophy to be played at Polo in the Park

On Wednesday 22 January, the announcement was made that The International Test Match for The Bryan Morrison Trophy, originally scheduled to take place on Saturday 7 March at The All England Polo Club, Hickstead, has been postponed.

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) have commented that the match will now take place on the Friday afternoon of Chesterton’s Polo in the Park, on Friday 5 June at Hurlingham Park, London. The idea behind the move is to enable more spectators to witness arena polo in all its glory, with over 20,000 spectators expected to attend.
The HPA are hoping the US Polo Association will continue to support The International Test Match for The Bryan Morrison Trophy, by sending a team over to compete against Frasers England.
The HPA have commented on the postponement, “The match will now be played in Hurlingham Park on the Friday afternoon in order to showcase arena polo to one of the largest crowds at polo in the UK.
“Although played on grass and with slightly different rules, the games at Chestertons Polo in the Park are very similar to arena polo and attract huge crowds. It is anticipated that the USPA will still provide the opposition, as was the intention in March, although this is still to be confirmed. Max Charlton will remain as Frasers England Captain for the day.
“Complimenting the on-field attractions, the HPA will also have a #trypolouk trade stand promoting polo across the three days of the event. Similar to what was done at the recent Olympia Horse Show, this is intended to ensure that the polo world in general benefits from the publicity created by what promises to be an excellent Test Match at the spiritual home of polo, Hurlingham Park.”
Earlier this month, the HPA announced that 10 goaler Max Charlton had agreed to Captain the Frasers England team set to compete in this illustrious match, taking to the arena for the first time as his nation’s Captain.

St. Moritz defeat rivals to win The 36th Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz

Between 24 – 26 January, the heart of the Engadin Valley was alight with snow polo action, as St. Moritz once again welcomed thousands upon thousands of snow polo fans for The 36th Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz.

With four teams competing, this year’s tournament was as closely fought as ever, but it was St. Moritz and the might of Azerbaijan – Land of Fire who found themselves in the Final yesterday afternoon. Having faced each other the day before, ending on a very close score, both teams knew the measure of the other, making the outcome hard to predict. The Azeris started with a half goal handicap advantage, but it was St. Moritz, wearing the eye-catching red shirts, who found the posts first, ending the first half 2-½. Following the half-time break, the Azeris came back with a vengeance, but with the wind picking up, they only made it through the posts once, to one in response from St. Moritz, ahead of the final period. Robert Strom, for St. Moritz, made the last chukka his own, controlling the play, making play in the challenging conditions look effortless. His efforts were rewarded with a fourth and final goal for his St. Moritz side, and with it the 2020 victory.
Awards were aplenty at the presentations, with the four St. Moritz team members each receiving a Mille Miglia Chopard watch, as well as the coveted trophy. The Best Playing Patron award was presented to Fabio Meier, from Team Maserati whilst the Polo Times Best Playing Pony was awarded to Casanova, played by Nacho Gonzalez in the fourth chukka of the Final and finally, Brit Max Charlton was named Most Valuable Player.
If you weren’t lucky enough to attend this year, fear not as the date for the 2021 tournament is already set! The frozen lake of St. Moritz will once again welcome The Snow Polo World Cup between 29 – 31 January 2021 and we cannot wait!

British Polo Gin Returns to Cirencester Park

2020 polo season is set to be a corker!

2020 may have got off to a particularly rainy start, but never fear, the summer will be here before we know it!

For the 2020 polo season we are delighted to be returning to The Thatched Clubhouse Bar at the highly prestigious Cirencester Park Polo Club , where British Polo Gin is also the Official Gin Sponsor, having renovated the Clubhouse Bar in 2019.

Set in the heart of the iconic lustrous green of Cirencester Park, CPPC is the beating heart of polo in Gloucestershire, with an extensive calendar of polo, from low goal to the upper echelons of international matches. What’s more, this season will see two new faces at the Club. Polo coaches extraordinaire Caspar West and Olivia Lamphee will be taking to the fields at CPPC, as the driving force behind The Cotswold Polo Academy, which has recently joined forces with OKL Polo to boost the fast growing demand for polo coaching at the Club. With new coaches also comes new ponies. The Club will have an additional 10 ponies, which will boost the already fantastic string of rental ponies for all levels of the sport. So, if you’re ready to take the next step, from the sidelines to centrefield, then look no further.

The Thatched Clubhouse Bar will be open on Thursdays and Saturday evenings, Sundays and Bank Holidays. World Polo League Win Maiden Kitzbühel Trophy

The 18th Bendura Bank Snow Polo World Cup Kitzbühel

Between 17 – 19 January, the heart of the Austrian Alps was buzzing with snow polo excitement, as eight teams battled for the coveted 18th Bendura Bank Snow Polo World Cup Kitzbühel title. Following a thrilling three days of play, two teams, new for the 2020 tournament, World Polo League and GP Mobility, found themselves in the Final in front of a thousands-strong crowd.
The consensus ahead of the game was almost impossible to call, with both teams having impressed over the previous two day’s play, but the might of American number one Nic Roldan, sporting the colours of the World Polo League, was a daunting prospect for GP Mobility. In the first chukka, Marc Ganzi and Roldan made up for GP Mobility’s two goal handicap advantage, levelling the scoreboard with two goals in quick succession, but the unparalleled skill of the 6 goal Brazilian Guilhermo Lins was exactly what GP Mobility needed. Going into half-time, a flurry of near misses and ultimately goals, saw World Polo League ahead, 7-6, but GP Mobility weren’t done yet.
The second half was just as fast and furious and saw some extraordinary ‘air’ play from Roldan, securing a further two goals for his team. GP Mobility managed to even the scoreboard once again, but as the final chukka loomed, however hard they fought, the Americans had the upper hand. With another ‘air shot volley’ from Roldan and only one goal in response from Lins, World Polo League signed on the dotted line with a 10-8 win. The GP Mobility Captain, Marcus Schalldach, was named Most Valuable Player, for his consistent play, whilst his teammate Guilhermo Lins was awarded the Fair Play honours. Finally, Joya, played by Nic Roldan and owned by French professional Pierre-Henri Ngoumou, was named Best Playing Pony.

Snow polo takes over the Alps

Polo is one of the oldest sports in the world. Many different countries claim to be the birthplace of the modern game, but most experts agree that the origins of modern polo can be traced back to horse riding nomads in Central Asia.

Today, polo is played in over 70 countries, it has been an Olympic sport and is played on grass, beaches, snow and deserts.

The birthplace of snow polo is St. Moritz in Switzerland. Although the sport had been played in this alpine setting as far back as 1899, it was not until 1985 that Reto Gaudenzi, the ‘God Father of snow polo’, revived the sport in St. Moritz and added his own unique twist, to turn the traditionally summer sport into a winter pastime, and so snow polo was born.

The first snow polo tournament in the world was played upon the frozen lake in St. Moritz in 1985. The idea of snow polo ignited an international interest in the winter sibling and today polo is played in every corner of the globe, from Aspen in the USA to Tianjin in China. Undoubtedly the world snow polo highlights include The St. Moritz Snow Polo World Cup , Snow Polo World Cup Kitzbühel and The St. Regis Snow Polo World Cup Championship in Aspen.

Although snow polo’s routes are firmly grounded in traditional polo, there are some key differences:

1) A standard international polo ground is usually 182m wide by 274m long, which is roughly three times as big as a football pitch!
However, snow polo grounds are usually smaller and in St. Moritz, the playing surface measures 80x200m.
2) All polo ponies are required to wear horse shoes, however in order to avoid the snow clogging up the shoes, snow polo shoes have a rubber tubing which pushes the snow out of the back of the shoe.
3) Studs are screwed into the horse’s shoes to give them better grip. In outdoor polo, just a single stud is fixed to the outside of the rear shoe but in snow polo, due to the potentially slippery surface, two studs are used on both the front and rear shoes.
4) Historically polo balls were made from bamboo or leather covered cork, but nowadays they are made from high-impact plastic moulded into a small white ball. In snow polo though, a white ball is hard to see against the surroundings, so instead they use a slightly larger, orange rubber ball which is easier to see and also travels less far (owing to the smaller snow polo grounds).
5) All players wear polo shirts for matches, which are usually short-sleeved. However as snow polo is much colder, the shirts are long sleeved for warmth.

Frasers England to take on the USA for The Bryan Morrison Trophy

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) has announced that 10 goal arena powerhouse Max Charlton has accepted the invitation to Captain the Frasers England team set to play against the USA for The Bryan Morrison Trophy on Saturday 7 March at the All England Polo Club, Hickstead. The match is set to be played between a 20-23 goal handicap, making it some of the highest rated arena polo in the world. The remaining Frasers England players are yet to be announced. This will be the first time young Charlton has Captained an England side, but following his rise to 10 goals last season, it is sure to be an exciting match with him at the helm.

El Overo Z7 UAE Claim Women’s Argentine Open

Resounding win for Brit and Argentine combination

Prior to The Argentine Open on Saturday 14 December, the Final of The III Women’s Argentine Open took place on ground two at Palermo, in front of thousands-strong crowds. With both El Overo Z7 UAE and La Dolfina Brava getting to the Final unbeaten, it was set to be an exciting affair of evenly matched sides.

The first chukka saw the teams eye each other up, with neither side finding the uprights, but as the second chukka commenced, El Overo Z7 UAE’s Lía Salvo secured two goals, putting her side ahead, where they stayed for the remainder of the match. By half-time, El Overo Z7 UAE were 6-2 ahead, with little in response from the La Dolfina Brava ladies. Salvo led her team valiantly, scoring five goals despite playing at back. In the third chukka and on her debut in the Open, young Brit 18-year-old Milly Hine, kept up El Overo Z7’s pressure, scoring a golazo as she took the ball along the boards from halfway in front of the grandstands, and found the uprights with a neck shot from

80 yards out. La Dolfina Brava came back in the seventh chukka, narrowing the lead to 9-5, but El Overo Z7 UAE’s lead was just too strong. Clara Cassino signed on the dotted line for El Overo Z7 UAE with a final goal in the eight chukka, to secure the title for the first time ever, 10-5. Salvo, for her unquestionable dominance, was awarded the Most Valuable Player honours, whilst the AAP Best Playing Pony went to Morena, played by Clara Cassino.

This year’s tournament saw six ladies’ teams participate, with a record-breaking number of entrants from the UK. Despite Nina Clarkin’s absence from the tournament, as she is pregnant with her third child, the Brits reigned supreme, with 10 goaler (in Argentina) Hazel Jackson-Gaona and British Polo Gin founder Richards cousin Milly Hine (4 goals) securing the trophy alongside their Argentine teammates and the Santa María de Lobos ladies, Sarah Wiseman, Emma Wood and Tamara Fox having great success, only losing in the Semi Final to finalists La Dolfina Brava. With this much talent on the field, the future is bright for women’s polo.

La Dolfina Brava & El Overo Z7 UAE finalists

The Final of The III Women’s Argentine Open has been decided! In an exciting development, Founder Richard Hine’s cousin, Milly, is one of the talented players who has reached the Final which will take place prior to the men’s Argentine Open Final on Saturday 14 December. Milly, like Richard, hails from a polo playing dynasty with her father having been both England Captain and Team Manager, and her grandfather John had his own UK high goal team in the 1980s; so to see such a young British player already hailing the Palermo grounds is no surprise.

On Wednesday 11 December, the Semi Finals took place at the AAP grounds in Pilar, with the four teams fielding impressive sides, vying for spots in the coveted Final. In the first Semi Final, the all-Argentine La Dolfina Brava came up against Brit/USA team Santa María de Lobos. The ‘home’ side were by far the stronger team, leading from the off to no goals in response until the fourth chukka, when Santa María de Lobos finally found the uprights. Despite strong defence and further goals from their rivals, La Dolfina Brava easily secured their spot in the 2019 Final.

There were more Brits making an appearance in the second Semi Final, with El Overo Z7 UAE proving their strength against the lower handicapped La Dolfina Amanara. The proof was in the pudding for El Overo Z7 UAE, with the tournament’s two highest handicapped players, British Hazel Jackson-Gaona (10 goals) and Argentine Lía Salvo (9 goals), alongside their lower handicapped teammates 7 goal Clara Cassino and Brit powerhouse Milly Hine (4 goals), as they held La Dolfina Amanara goalless until sixth chukka, with 10 goals on their scoresheet. At the final bell, El Overo Z7 UAE took home the Final position with a 14-2 final score.

The Final will take place prior to the men’s Argentine Open Final on Saturday 14 December, with the team line-ups reflecting the 2018 championship Final. The III Women’s Argentine Open Final Teams:

Play underway in Palermo

The III Women’s Argentine Open is underway in the heart Argentina, on the pristine Palermo grounds. On Monday 2 December, 2018 champions La Dolfina Brava began their 2019 tournament with a 9-3 win against rivals La Ensenada. Later the same day, 30 goal El Overo Z7 UAE, the highest handicapped team in the tournament, secured a resounding 16-1 win against the extremely under-handicapped La Victoria (who are playing the open tournament off just 16 goals). El Overo Z7 UAE is a firm fan favourite, with 10 goaler Brit Hazel Jackson-Gaona and her British teammate Milly Hine (4 goals), taking to the field alongside Argentina’s top female player, Lía Salvo (9 goals) and young Clara Cassino (7 goals).

In more exciting play on Wednesday 4 December, La Dolfina Amanara began their tournament against La Ensenada, with a 5-3 win and Dawn Jones’s Santa María de Lobos took on La Victoria later in the day, defeating them 9-4. Over the weekend, La Dolfina Brava continued their winning streak with an 8-2 win over La Dolfina Amanara, whilst the Brits were consistently strong, with a 12-3 win for El Overo Z7 UAE over Santa María de Lobos.
The Final is scheduled to take place on Saturday 14 December before The Argentine Open, in front of thousands of avid fans.

HPA National Club Championships 3 & 12 Goal Finals

HPA arena schedule kicks off with a bang

On Sunday 1 December, the first HPA National Club Championship Finals took place at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club under chilly, but sunny, skies.

First to take to the arena were the 3 goal Final teams, Regal Warriors and Rosina. Raph Singh’s Regal Warriors are a regular in this fixture, but it was the first time Orlagh Kelly’s Rosina found themselves in the Final. Kelly’s team were riding out in honour of Orlagh’s mother Rosina, who recently passed away, so their support team on the sidelines were in great voice. The match was fast and frenetic from the off, with both teams playing way above their handicap. As the first half drew to a close, Rosina led 10-7, but with just a minute to go, Theo Singh secured a goal, swiftly followed by two two-pointers for Raph Singh, putting Regal Warriors narrowly in the lead 12-10, at the bell. The close action continued in the second half, with tensions mounting and the pressure reaching fever pitch. Going into the fourth, Regal Warriors led 15-14, but as the Regal Warrior goal score mounted, Rosina followed closely behind, evening the scoreboard and steadily climbing. With a goal from the seemingly unstoppable Saskia Meadows in the final 44 seconds, it looked like Rosina might just push the match into overtime, but the clock wasn’t in their favour. The bell sounded and Regal Warriors took home the title 19-18. Meadows, for her continuous epic play was named The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player, whilst Raph Singh’s pony Heidi was awarded the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug.
Following the tense 3 goal Final, many were hoping for a slightly less stressful affair in The 12 Goal HPA National Club Championship Final, but this was a pipedream. It was the second outing for Regal Warriors, with an amended line-up, but just as much fervour. Up against Ana Escobedo’s Ojo Caliente, the Final was set to be an exciting match, with two lady patrons facing each other.
Ojo Caliente began with a two goal advantage, coming up against the 10 goal arena powerhouse Max Charlton. Despite a quick-fire goal from Charlton in the first 10 seconds, it was Ojo Caliente who quickly began the real scoring. At the end of the first chukka, Ojo Caliente led 10-4, much to Regal Warrior’s dismay. They held the lead in this thrilling Final at half-time, 16-11, but the stress felt in the stands, was nothing in comparison to that on the field. With tensions mounting, both Charlton and Josh Clover were given yellow cards for some “extreme defending”, in the words of commentator, Chris Hyde. The goals continued to mount in the second half, with each team passionately fighting for each yard. Going into the fourth and final chukka, Ojo Caliente were still leading 23-21, but Regal Warriors were coming up fast. Charlton evened the scoreboard, 23-23, then 24-24 following a goal from Clover, and again to 25-25 following a goal off seasoned pro Adolfo Casabal’s stick. With just seven seconds on the clock and the scoreboard sitting at 25-25, a collision between Regal Warrior’s Hugo Singh and Casabal, secured a 15 yard penalty in Ojo Caliente’s favour, which Casabal scored without any issue. The clock ticked down, Clover took the ball out of harm’s way and with the final bell, Ojo Caliente won 26-25. Adolfo Casabal was named The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player, whilst Max Charlton’s pony Jesus, was awarded the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug.

Frasers England win Ladies International

On Sunday 24 November, in the first international arena bout of the season and in a break from the wet British winter, Frasers England defeated WIP UK 17-9 in the Final of The Ladies Nations Cup at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club (RCBPC). Following an exciting match, Frasers England not only picked up the victory honours, but also The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player for back Lucy Coddington, who also received a bottle of our delicious British Polo Gin Classic as part of her prize, and the Polo Times Best Playing Pony honours for Saskia Meadows’ pony Loucha. Congratulations ladies!

British Polo Gin visits Houses of Parliament

Throw back Thursday time… to a few weeks ago when we went to The Houses of Parliament alongside some of the finest food and drink producers from across Gloucestershire to showcase our artisan produce.

Richard Graham , Gloucestershire Conservative MP and Craft Drink and Gloucester Services hosted the day, everything from Hobbs House Bakery , to Gloucester Biltong Company were included in the Taste of Gloucestershire event on Tuesday, October 29th and goodness are they delicious!

MPs from across the country could be found in the Jubilee Room, where the event took place, sampling wine produced by the Royal Agricultural University near Cirencester, eating truffles crafted in Nailsworth to name a few and sipping our fabulous organic gins of our stable; British Polo Gin Classic, Botanical, Strawberry & Rose and lastly the famous Christmas favourite… Sloe Gin , they certainly went down well!

Whilst all this excitement was going on we were lucky enough to be able to go into the chambers to watch the early parliamentary general election bill to view our democracy in all its glory, and of course watch Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn battle it out. With such poignant politics in the air right now, there was never a more perfect day to attend The Houses of Parliament!

We would like to thank Richard Graham and his team for the fantastic day they put on for the British Polo Gin and all other suppliers, we are sure it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Gloucestershire club, Edgeworth Polo Club, has upped the ante with the largest ever prize money in Gloucestershire announced for their polo 2020 season. The 6 – 8 goal Isa Tournament will be taking place between 30 May – 7 June with teams given the opportunity to win a whopping £16,000, kindly supported by the Isa family. Jono Smail, Edgeworth Polo Manager said following the tournament announcement, “This is very exciting for the Club. The Isa family have supported us for a long time and we are thrilled to have their continued support.” Team entries are open now and will close on 27 May 2020. The 79th Tortugas Open Final

Ellerstina win the postponed Tortugas Open Final

On Friday 15 November, the postponed Final of The Tortugas Open took place at The Tortugas Country Club. The first Triple Crown tournament matches were postponed in late October due to inclement weather and heavy rains. In a breath-taking Final, the world’s two best Argentine teams battled for the coveted title, with the sought-after first Triple Crown title at stake. Due to the change in schedule, the Final of the second Triple Crown tournament had already happened, The Hurlingham Open Final, which saw La Dolfina take home the trophy. With the odds in the 2018 winners, La Dolfina’s, favour, it took great gusto for Ellerstina to fight back and take the win.
From the first chukka, La Dolfina took the lead, securing an extensive 6-2 lead by the end of the third chukka. The second half saw the tables turn, as Ellerstina fought back hard. But, it wasn’t until the final chukka that Ellerstina finally took full control. At the final bell, the boys in black had secured a 12th goal taking home the win 12-11 against their La Dolfina rivals. Nico Pieres was presented with the Most Valuable Player honours, whilst the Best Playing Pony rugs went to Irenita Acertada, played by Pablo Mac Donough, for the AAP honours and Open Biznieta, played by Nico Pieres, for the AACCP honours. With two Triple Crown titles apiece, it remains to be seen who can champion in The Argentine Open, which commenced last week.

126th Hurlingham Open Final

La Dolfina secure the win

On Saturday 9 November, La Dolfina secured the second title in The Argentine Triple Crown, The 126th Hurlingham Open Final at Palermo. In a somewhat well worn routine, La Dolfina came up against the Pieres clan, Ellerstina, in a fast-fought match of attrition. La Dolfina ultimately defeated their Pieres rivals with a 16-13 final score. It wasn’t just an important match for the La Dolfina organisation as a whole, but also for the individual players. Adolfo Cambiaso secured his 13th Hurlingham Open title, whilst it was a 10th for Pablo Mac Donough. Juan Martín Nero secured his ninth, whilst Uruguayan David ‘Pelón’ Stirling secured his sixth.
The Most Valuable Player award was presented to Juan Martín Nero, whilst Dolfina Cuartetera B04 was named Best Playing Pony of the Final.

James Beim Retires as England Captain

Beim stands down after five years

After five years at the helm, Frasers England Captain James Beim will be standing down from the influential role. Having represented England since 2001, Beim has played in The Coronation Cup 12 times, winning seven times, three times as Captain. He was also Captain for three Westchester Cup victories. Ex-Chairman of the International Committee, John Tinsley stated following the announcement, “Beimy has been a senior member of the England squad during the past 18 years of my involvement with the International Committee. I have much admired him from the day, in 2001, I met him at Melbourne airport to join the England FIP group, until the present as England Captain. Perhaps my greatest memory of him was as a serious member of the England team that unexpectedly won The Westchester in Florida in 2009. I invited him to be England Captain in 2013 and he has carried this out with great skill, dignity and diplomacy.”
His final match as Captain was the 2019 Coronation Cup, which saw Frasers England come up against possibly the strongest team in the world, Argentina. Opponent and Argentine Captain Facundo Pieres said on Beim’s retirement, “Being Captain of your country is always a great honour. Like I have, Beimy has enjoyed the responsibility that comes with that. He is a great competitor and was a great Captain for England. I wish him all the best for the future, knowing that his passion for playing polo will not be any less.”

Ladies' Handicap Changes

HPA releases End of Season list

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) has released the list of End of Season Ladies' handicap changes. Amongst the notable increases, at the higher end of the list, a number of British players have seen their handicaps raised. Lucy Coddington, Heloise Wilson Smith and Milly Hine have been moved up to 6 goals, whilst Lottie Lamacraft has gone from 6 to 7. Alice Servaes and Rosanna Turk have also both been moved up, from 4 to 5.

Further down the list, a number of players have been moved up two goals, with CANI patron Louise Jebson moving from 1 to 3 goals and Victrix Ludorum winning patron Alicia Woods moved from 0 to 2 goals.

A total of 113 handicap changes have been released and the full list available here now. The changes will be subject to ratification and are set to be valid from 1 January 2020.

UK End of Season Handicap Changes

HPA releases handicap list

On Thursday 19 September, the HPA released their 2019 End of Season handicap changes, we thought this piece from Polo Times magazine would be great to share with our British Polo Gin friends.

These changes come following the Vision for Polo consultation document, recently released by incoming Chairman Nick Wiles, discussing the future of our sport and the HPA’s plan for change over the next five years. We took an in-depth look at this document, as well as the ongoing handicap issue in the September issue of Polo Times , out now.
This time last year, controversy arose around the move from the HPA to alleviate the ‘bottleneck’ of -2 and -1 goal players, by, broadly speaking, moving all these lower handicapped players up a handicap and automatically moving all those who had played in the 8 goal Victor Ludorum series to 0 goals. It appears this year’s list sings from the same hymn sheet, with a good number of lower handicapped players rising in the rankings.

In Polo Times story from 20 September 2018 they spoke about the implementation of the new handicapping system. “Handicapping is a contentious issue and is certainly one that is well overdue for reform. The HPA’s guidelines (including that a player with a 1 goal handicap should be judged on being able solely to have a 50 percent chance of taking the ball from the halfway line to goal, with no specification of speed or marking) has been met with derision.” Over the 2019 season, clubs have been welcome to express their opinions of the new system to the HPA at any time.

48th Torneo Internacional Mansion de Polo

The 48th Torneo Internacional Mansion de Polo continues at Santa María Polo Club over August with two exciting Finals having taken place over the weekend. Excitingly, amongst the group of professional players playing on finals day were British International stalwarts, Jamie Le Hardy & Malcolm Borwick whilst young gun Tommy Beresford was also gracing the fields.

The weekend began with the low goal Copa de Plata Isola 1892 Final, in which La Esperanza defeated Rhone Hill, 9-8. It was a close fought match until the very last moments, when La Esperanza raced ahead to take home the victory. The day’s play continued with the Final of the medium goal Royal Bliss Copa de Plata Final. Ayala took home their second win of the Spanish tournament, with a 14-9 win over rivals Royal Salute, which featured Malcolm Borwick and Jaime Le Hardy on their roster. The first half of the match was a close affair, but following half-time, Ayala took control. Ayala’s Lucas James was named Most Valuable Player, whilst Regalona, ridden by Iñigo Zobel was named Best Playing Pony.

In the final of the high goal Royal Bliss Copa de Plata, Brunei continued to show their strength, winning the 10-9 against rivals MB Polo. Their 10 goal powerhouse, Juan Martín Nero, was named Most Valuable Player in front of thousands of excited spectators, with the match followed by The White Summer Festival to round the day’s play off.

Half a lime

Half a Teaspoon of sugar

125 ml Fevertree Elderflower Tonic

Cartier Queen’s Cup Draw

Guards High Goal is underway

On 4 May, the draw for The Cartier Queen’s Cup took place at Guards Polo Club. 12 teams will take part in this year’s tournament, with 2018 champions La Indiana returning to defend their title. There are several other familiar names taking to the pristine Guards fields in the form of 2018 finalists Park Place, 2011 winners Talandracas and 2018 Cartier Trophy (Subsidiary Final) winners Emlor. Furthermore, Rashid Albwardy will be returning with his Dubai team looking for a seventh win alongside a second team from the Middle East in the form of HH Sheika Maitha’s UAE. High goal regulars VS King Power will also be returning alongside Monterosso and Hilali Noordeen’s Casa La Vista Ibiza. Also to return to Guards this season will be Corinne Ricard’s Murus Sanctus and Jean François Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco. The final team on the list is a new name to UK high goal polo. David Paradice’s Scone Polo will be making use of two England stalwarts, James Beim and James Harper alongside Argentine powerhouse Nico Pieres, so this is a team to watch.

Play gets underway on Tuesday 21 May, with the Final scheduled to take place on Sunday 16 June.

UK High Goal Season

Teams confirmed for upcoming season

The rumour mill has once again been turning in regard to the upcoming UK high goal season, with 13 teams unofficially confirmed. The biggest shake-ups of the upcoming season see the return of 2017 Gold Cup winners King Power and Rashid Albwardi’s Dubai, following a high goal hiatus since 2016. Andrey Borodin and his Park Place team will return for a second year competing in the British high goal, but noticeably absent will not only be world number one Adolfo Cambiaso, but also the 2018 Gold Cup winners, and all-Brit line-up, El Remanso.

James Beim and James Harper will be teaming up again, this time under the Scone colours, whilst as far as Polo Times are currently aware, Ollie Cudmore and Charlie Hanbury will not be playing the high goal season. What’s more, this season will see two female Captains taking to the high goal fields, with not only Corinne Ricard returning with her Murus Sanctus side, but also HH Sheika Maitha competing with the strong combination of Guillermo ‘Sapo’ Caset, Santiago Toccalino and Cacu Araya in The Cartier Queen’s Cup.

Play gets underway at Great Trippetts Polo Club and The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in May with the Final of The Trippetts Challenge on Thursday 16 May and the Final of The Prince of Wales on Sunday 18 May. This season is set to be a thrilling battle for victory, with 13 teams competing for the five key titles.

This traditional, Cotswold pub consists of a small, friendly team who take great pride in making The Foston’s Ash a great venue and we are looking to recruit a Full-Time Manager to add to the team. We are both a local pub and also a destination restaurant with a varied seasonal menu including local produce.

Building on 100% year on year growth, we are delighted to report that British Polo Gin® has been awarded two of the most prestigious international awards out there for our one-of-a-kind organic gin, British Polo Botanical Gin, as well as an award closer to home. Going the extra mile to be 100% organic appears to have paid off, giving us a rich and smooth flavour profile and we couldn't be happier!

On 1 August, The Great Taste Awards 2018 announced British Polo Gin® Botanical Gin’s receipt of three stars, a feat which only 192 products out of 12,634 entrants achieved in this year’s competition. No other gin achieved the prestigious 3 star award and we are delighted. We can therefore suggest that British Polo Gin is leading the field both in the organic gin market and regular gin market.

The Great Taste board commented that, “The balance marks it out for universal purpose – it simply tastes great.” They also noted that our Botanical Gin has an, “Expressive nose with floral notes and woody hints, a very nice delicate mouthfeel, subtle sweetness and smoothness leads laced with spicy juniper, floral woody notes, good finish with crisp, lengthy notes.”

There were 12,634 entries into Great Taste this year and of those products, 192 were awarded a 3 star, 1,207 received a 2 star and 3,254 were awarded a one star accolade. The panel of judges this year included: MasterChef 2018 champion, Kenny Tutt, chef and food writer, Elly Curshen, eco chef and food writer, Tom Hunt, author and chef, Zoe Adjonyoh, baker Tom Herbert, author and blogger, Izy Hossack, and baker and recipe writer, Martha Collison, as well as food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges and Sourced Market.

In other exciting news, British Polo Gin® was also awarded a 2018 Bronze Award by this year’s International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). For nearly 50 years this competition has highlighted the best wines and spirits from across the globe, setting the international benchmark for quality.

Two wins for the home team at RCBPC

On Saturday 28 July, the polo world turned out at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club for the 2018 International Day. The event was a combination of pomp, polo and Britishness as spectators were treated to a three polo matches, a dressage masterclass courtesy of three-time Olympic gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin and a plethora of pitchside entertainment. British Polo Gin were on hand to keep players and spectators refreshed as one of the Official Drinks Partners, so with an organic Chukka Cocktail in hand, the day commenced.

As the thousands of spectators found their perfect spot for the day’s proceedings, a selection of Pony Club teams from across the country paraded around the ground with the Berkshire hounds to mark the beginning of this special day. A junior match took place in centrefield to showcase the next generation of polo players, but it was at three o’clock that attentions really turned to the ground, as the national teams from Flannels England and the USA paraded out accompanied by The Scots Guards band. In true British fashion, the weather had taken a slight turn for the worse as the play began, with huge gusts of wind blustering across the ground, but on the dot of three o’clock, the first ball of The Westchester Cup was thrown-in.

With a handicap difference between the teams, Flannels England began with a one goal advantage, but it didn’t take long for the USA to catch-up. Nic Roldan flew to goal from the first throw-in to even the scoreboard, but despite being slightly shocked, Flannels England came back hard. The play was ferocious and relentless, with the wind direction and speed causing a huge advantage in one direction. Ollie Cudmore put Flannels ahead for the first time with a converted penalty 3 and the boys in white held that lead for the rest of the match. Two more goals off Cudmore’s stick and one in response from Julio Arellano saw Flannels England leading the match 4-2 at the end of the first chukka. The English onslaught didn’t stop there, as James Beim and James Harper continued the Flannels England dominance in the second chukka, despite constant efforts from the USA’s Jeff Hall and Roldan to counteract their plays. As the end of the third chukka loomed and another goal from Harper sailed through the posts, Flannels England led 7-2 as the crowd came onto the field to tread-in at half-time.

The second half began with a quick penalty conversion from the USA which put them back in the game, 7-3, but the cohesion of the Flannels England players, three of whom have been playing the 2018 high goal season together as The King Power Gold Cup winning side El Remanso, was too strong an opponent. Roldan scored his second goal of the match to make it 8-4 and in the following play he seemed to be everywhere, doing everything. Unlike the English team, the Americans hadn’t had much time to practice before the match and as the second half continued, the cracks began to show. The Flannels England boys continued their control of the play and with the scores reading 11-4 to England at the beginning of the sixth chukka, it was going to take a miracle for the American’s to turn the game around. The USA found two goals in that last chukka, but with another goal from England, their fate was completely sealed. Flannels England walked away with The Westchester Cup 12-6, thus bringing the overall Westchester rankings to 10 Cups to America and eight to England. England Captain James Beim was presented with the Most Valuable Player award, whilst his pony Salsita was awarded the Best Playing Pony rug.

Following The Westchester Cup, the Flannels England Ladies team took to the pristine RCBPC ground for The Thai Polo Club Ladies International for The Diamond Jubilee Trophy against a Rest of the World team. Going into the match, Flannels England Ladies had the upper hand, with ladies world-number-one Nina Clarkin bringing up the rear. However, the Rest of the World Ladies refused to go down without a fight. 9 goaler Lía Salvo opened up the scoring with a field goal for the Rest of the World Ladies, but Flannels England took their time and came back with a vengeance. Clarkin secured England’s first goal, and in combination with the Most Valuable Player Hazel Jackson-Gaona, showing her immense skill, helped their team to secure a further three goals before the half-time bell, to end the half 4-1. If it was possible, Flannels England came back even stronger in the second half, with an initial goal from Rosanna Turk and another from Jackson-Gaona, 6-1. Sarah Wiseman broke away from the intense play in midfield to put another goal on the board for the Rest of the World Ladies, trying to bring her team back into the game. The play became even more ferocious in the final chukka, but despite countless attempts to convert their goal attempts into goal victories, the Rest of the World Ladies just couldn’t catch the Flannels England side. The final score rested at 8-2 to the home side, to a cheer from the assembled crowd. Jess, owned by Doug and Sue McGregor and played by Clarkin was presented with the Best Playing Pony rug.

Captain Jess Wood to start at Tidworth

On Saturday 14 July, British Army and Royal Navy players from across the country will gather at Tidworth Polo Club for their annual battle for The HACKETT Rundle Cup .

This morning, the British Army Polo Association announced the line-up for this year’s HACKETT Army team, which will include a woman for the first time in history. The team is as follows:

HACKETT Army (1): Capt Jess Wood RHA (0), Capt Moss Hamilton IG (0), Lt Rishi Ahluwalia LD (0) & Capt Paddy Selfe KRH (1)

Captain Jess Wood will be the first woman to play for the British Army in The Rundle Cup’s 100 year history. Throughout her time in the Army, Capt Wood has reached a 0 goal handicap and has played for Army teams in numerous smaller tournaments.

The HACKETT Rundle Cup day will commence with a celebrity match in aid of INSPIRE, which will be followed by a free-fall parachute display by the REME Parachute Team. The local Pony Club will also be on hand to showcase their talents in a youth exhibition match. The HACKETT Rundle Cup will commence at 4.30pm, accompanied by T he Royal Marines Band of Collingwood, whilst there will be the usual Champagne and Pimm’s bar, as well as caterers and an overflowing trade village, with spectators welcome to bring picnics along. British Polo Gin will be on hand, serving their 100% organic gin from their pitch-side cocktail bars and their bar in the Clubhouse. Tickets start at £5 and can be purchased here.

On Friday 11 May, action kicked off at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in The Prince of Wales Trophy 22 goal. Four teams have entered this year’s competition, with the Final scheduled for this Saturday, 19 May. Emlor were the first to seal a win, defeating Jaxx Coco/Les Lions, 12-11 on Friday 11 May. In an exceedingly controversial match regarding helmet regulation, American team Valiente were the next to take to the field against rivals Monterosso on Saturday 12 May. Valiente came out the winners with an 11-7 win and with play continuing tomorrow Tuesday 15 May, it is all to play for.

Cortium join the 22 Goal season

In the past week, news has been received of a new high goal team to be gracing the UK high goal season, due to commence in the coming weeks. Having been absent in the 22 goal since 2014, Adrian Kirby’s Cortium will take part in this year’s Murus Sanctus Trippetts Challenge, The Cartier Queen’s Cup and potentially The King Powe r Gold Cup (yet to be confirmed). Kirby will be joined by Juan Gris Zavaleta, 9 goal Nico Pieres and British Polo Gin favourite, British player Malcolm Borwick, making this team a real ‘one to watch’.

Daily Racing Form Become U.S. Open Champions

U.S. Polo Open Championship Final

Sunday 22 April saw the highlight of the culmination of months of hard work and preparation for the ultimate goal of the 2018 American high goal season.

Going into this Final, C.V. Whitney Cup and USPA Gold Cup winner Valiente looked like the stronger team, but as the Floridian rain began to fall and the national anthem rang out across the Engel & Völkers Field 1 at the International Polo Club , Palm Beach, all previous matches were forgotten, with focus on the job at hand.

Facundo Pieres was the first to find the posts, turning the ball from a defensive line to fly through the posts at the far end of the field, quickly answered by Daily Racing Form ’s (DRF) 10 goal powerhouse Hilario Ulloa. DRF continued to shut down Valiente’s plays, despite impressive teamwork from the world number one and two, Adolfo Cambiaso and Facundo Pieres.

It wasn’t until the third chukka that the stalemate was broken, as DRF took the lead for the first time, following an in-air goal from Ulloa. They quickly extended their lead to 5-3 with a field goal, but just before the half-time bell, Cambiaso ensured Valiente weren’t done yet, scoring a goal to bring Valiente within a goal of DRF once again. Valiente continued their attack, but whilst still a goal down in the fifth chukka, an errant ball connected with Ulloa’s face, temporarily halting the match while he received stitches to his right eye.

The Obregon cousins, Agustín and Mariano, stepped up their game as they welcomed their 10 goal team mate back onto the field, but Valiente evened the scoreboard just before the final chukka. Jared Zenni scored a breathtaking goal, from an almost impossible angle, to give DRF a little more breathing room as they went up to a two goal lead.

As the seconds ticked down, DRF gave away an all-important penalty, which Pieres ably slotted through the posts, but as the final bell sounded, DRF ’s defence had held off Valiente to the final moment and their fervour was rewarded with the US Polo Open Championship Final title, with a 10-9 final score, halting Valiente’s Triple Crown dreams in their tracks. For his incredible angled goal, Jared Zenni was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award, whilst his team mate Mariano Obregon’s pony Millonaria, was presented with the Best Playing Pony rug.

This tournament marks the end of the American high goal season, with the lion’s share of professional players now turning their attention to the UK high goal season, which is due to commence in the coming weeks. HPA International Test Match for the Bryan Morrison Trophy

Flannels England lifts the trophy high

Despite adverse weather in the past week, the Hurlingham Polo Association International Test Match for the Bryan Morrison Trophy went ahead on Saturday 3 March. The match, normally played at AEPC Hickstead, was relocated to Westcroft Park Polo Club at the last minute, due to a frozen arena surface, but with a longed-for break in the snowy weather from the ‘Beast from the East’, the Flannels England team and the USA team took to the pitch for the 2018 Test Match.
From the first throw-in, both teams fought for play as though their lives depended on it. Chris Hyde, on his usual strong form, was the first to convert his efforts into a goal, taking the ball from the top corner of the arena and racing through mid-field to score a quick-fire goal – a great start for the Flannels England team. But, Playnation USA’s Pelon Escapite quickly responded with a goal for our friends from across the pond. This fraught and close play was reminiscent in the chukkas to follow. Both teams matched their competition’s goal scoring attempts as the scores read 4-4 at the end of the first chukka and 8-8 at half time. It wasn’t until the third chukka that a break in the ‘tit for tat’ style play occurred. Flannels England seemed to lose a bit of their earlier pizazz in the third, missing numerous attempts on goal and only scoring two goals, one off Sebastian Dawnay’s stick and another from a 15 yard penalty by Hyde. But, as the Playnation USA boys seemed to be in the same rutt, Flannels England were lucky to hold the scoreboard into the fourth chukka. With the scores reading 10-9 at the beginning of the chukka there was little in it, and as per the previous three chukkas, the Americans weren’t letting go easily. Hyde scored the first goal, followed by an amazing angled shot from Shane Rice in response, but with another goal from Hyde it looked like the Americans weren’t going to have their cake and eat it too. But, as if by magic, the Americans were awarded two penalties in a row, which if scored could have changed the outcome of the Test Match. However, the polo gods just weren’t being that kind – Shane Rice missed both of the penalties and despite some truly incredible play, saving three 25 yard defended penalties off Hyde’s stick, Playnation USA just couldn’t catch up. With two more goals from Eden Ormerod, the Flannels England boys signed on the dotted line. For his incredible defensive work, Rice was presented with The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player Award as well as bottle of delicious organic British Polo Gin, whilst Prada, played by Chris Hyde in the fourth chukka and owned by Richard Blake-Thomas was awarded the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug.
Michael Amoore, Chairman of the HPA Arena Polo Association told us,”Thanks must go to Richard Blake-Thomas and his team at Westcroft Park Polo Club . With only 48 hours’ notice, they produced a great day of polo for both the teams and the gathered spectators. A special mention must also go to the grooms, who turned out some amazing horses, despite the challenging conditions."

2018 Arena Gold Cup Final

SAPA MHF Docklands and Glitterati Polo take home the crown

On a bright Saturday afternoon, the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club stands were full to bursting with eager polo fans, despite the chilly easterly wind, whipping in from Russia. Up to this point, Regal Warriors had looked like the likely champions, having completed the qualifying stages with only one narrow loss under their belt. So, as the teams entered the arena for the Final, it was all to play for. Going into the first chukka, tensions were immediately high. Both teams raced up and down the arena, jostling for possession and dominance. Regal Warriors took the early lead, 4-3, but as the teams, literally, battled through to half-time, including a yellow card for SAPA MHF Dockland's Harold Hodges for a questionable ride-off, it was 5-5 on the scoreboard as the teams went into the second half. The match continued with constant pressure from both sides. At the end of the third chukka, Regal Warriors still narrowly led 11-10 and with a flurry of goals to make it 15-12 at the beginning of the fourth chukka, it looked like it was all over for SAPA MHF Docklands. But, with the true power of resurgence, Ed Banner-Eve scored a whopping five goals in the final chukka, with one from brother Alec, to win the match 18-15 for the second year in a row for SAPA/SUPA, to a roar from the gathered crowd. For this epic final play, Ed was awarded The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player Award, whilst Grant Collett's pony Zorro was named the Polo Times Best Playing Pony. The teams were presented with prizes from Tally Ho Farm as well as bottles of our delicious organic gin , the perfect tipple following a match. Earlier in the day, Tchogan beat rivals Sifani, 20-12 in the Silver Cup Final, taking third place.
Saturday also saw the Final of the inaugural Ladies British Arena Open at RCBPC. This tournament has come together as the brainchild of Rosie Ross and saw four sponsored teams of evenly matched players compete for Saturday's Final. Glitterati Polo and Tally Ho Farm played a very competitive match, both teams fielding some expert players. From the word go, Glitterati Polo took control, leading 9-4 by the half-time bell. After a strong team talk for the Tally Ho Farm ladies during the break, they came out into the second half with renewed vigour, but despite their best efforts, they couldn't quite catch up with the ladies in black, who took the Final 16-12. Kirsty Craig was presented with The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player and Wren, owned and played by Rosie Ross was awarded the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug. Speaking after the match, Rosie Ross said, "I really hope this is something we can continue with next year. It has been a fantastic experience to run it alongside the Arena Gold Cup. But for now, it's on to the Women's Victor Ludorum this summer."

124th Argentine Open HSBC Polo Championship Begins

Alegría lead the Zone B rankings

On Saturday 4 November, the first matches in the 124th Argentine Open HSBC Polo Championship were played on the grounds at Palermo, Buenos Aires. A total of 10 teams are taking part in this year’s tournament with players hailing from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Spain, South Africa and Uruguay.

La Irenita and La Esquina were the first to take to Ground 2 for the Zone A qualifiers. The initial favour fell into La Irenita’s hands, but as the half-time bell went, La Esquina tried their best to fight back. The score was 14-11 at the end of the match in La Irenita’s favour, with it 150 points in the rankings.

La Aguada Las Monjitas were next to take to the Ground for their match against La Albertina Abu Dhabi. La Albertina were absolutely overwhelmed by the might of the Novillo Astrada’s team losing 13-10 at the final bell.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the next day, play continued in the Zone B qualifiers. In the first match of the day, Cría Yatay beat Chapaleufú 18-8 on Ground 2, as brothers Eduardo and Alberto Heguy took to the Palermo grounds to compete for the Open once again. Chapaleufú began the match with fervour, but Cría Yatay broke away quickly, with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first chukka. This strength was to continue for the rest of the match, despite strong play from the Chapaleufú team. On Ground 1, Alegría Land Rover beat La Dolfina Polo Ranch 17-12 to up their tournament points to 650. The boys in pink began the match with extemely strong play, reaching a 5-0 lead by the end of the second chukka. But, La Dolfina Polo Ranch pushed back with a vengeance, as Diego Cavanagh scored goal after goal to bring the scores closer. Sapo Caset and Facundo Sola changed positions, to shake-up the play, helping Alegría to win this important victory, placing them at the top of the rankings this early on in the tournament. In contrast, Cría Yatay have scored 350 points thus far, La Dolfina Polo Ranch 100 and Chapaleufú are yet to achieve any.

The next matches wil take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November and will be scheduled as follows:

England win bronze

Yesterday, Sunday 29 October saw two matches push into an extra chukka at the Sydney Polo Club as the battle on Finals’ Day for the XI FIP World Polo Championships rankings got underway.

Sydney did not disappoint from its sunny stereotype as the sun blazed city and even Australian spectators commented on the heat of the day. The soaring temperatures were equally matched with scorching action on the International field as the final four teams, out of the original 86 countries, prepared to battle it out for a podium place. The first Final of the day was between England and USA for third place and the players did not disappoint, with a very tight game which saw close marking resulting in few opportunities to score. England initially pulled ahead with Satnam Dhillon, Peter Webb and Henry Porter all finding the posts to only one in reply from the USA during the first chukka. So the England dominance continued in the second and third chukkas, meaning that going into the final chukka they had led throughout with the score resting at 4-3. However, the USA did not go down without a fight and great play saw two American goals in quick succession allowing them to pull ahead for the first time in the game. However, with just moments to go to the bell Dhillon scored to bring it to 5 all, meaning an extra chukka. Tense times ensued for the England supporters, but Webb saved the day with the winning goal safely dispatched to bring the final score to 6-5 in England’s favour, thus securing them third place.

In the second match of the day, Argentina beat Chile to win the XI FIP World Polo Championships, a fifth championship win for Argentina since the tournament's conception in the 1980s.

The presentation followed, which equalled the pomp and ceremony of any high goal tournament around the world. Speeches, bands, numerous awards and congratulations ensued – it was a true celebration.

And so, the XI FIP World Polo Championships drew to a close. The most lasting impression was the truly amazing horsepower which had been organised and amassed for the event. 270 horses from all over Australia had been loaned for the tournament without charge; they were carefully numbered and each were easily tracked by large numbers on their hindquarters (and brands on hooves) and accurate listing in the programme. The generosity of the lenders was repaid as their ponies were admired, coveted, and no doubt will be changing hands. The Australian polo community had worked together, enjoying this event to honour their fantastic horsepower and also their cooperation and cohesion. Many around the world could learn from their example in what was a great event at many levels.

XI FIP World Championships Are Underway

Argentina, Australia, England and Chile secure their first victories

Over the past few days, the FIP World Championship qualifiers got underway in Sydney, Australia. Saturday saw the opening game day, with wins for Zone A’s Argentina and Australia. Argentina were the first to take to the field against the USA. The South American team made a great start, immediately taking the lead. The USA came back with might, but by the third chukka, Argentina had hold of the game with the goal difference broadening to 12-5½. But, the USA weren’t done yet and came back to score four times in the last two minutes, bringing the scoreboard to a more even 12-9½ at the final buzzer. The second match of the day was a much closer affair. The home team, Australia, went head to head with Spain in a match of two halves. As play progressed, it looked like Spain were in for the win, leading 9-7, but with mere minutes to go, and then an extra chukka as the match ended on a draw, the home team rode to victory with a score of 10-9.

Yesterday saw the opening stages for Zone B. England and India were the first to take to the field with the match very much falling in England’s favour. With a final score of 16-1, England made a substantial mark on the Zone. Later in the day, defending champions Chile beat New Zealand 9-2 in a fast-paced game. In the first couple of chukkas, the play was even, however the Chileans took advantage of every opportunity New Zealand dropped, ultimately trumping their rivals.

Zone A’s play continues tomorrow, Tuesday 24 October, where spectators will see Argentina vs Spain and Australia vs USA, whilst Zone B will continue on Wednesday with reigning champions Chile will take on India and New Zealand will be playing England.

XI FIP World Championships

Play begins today

This week sees the much-awaited beginning of the FIP XI World Championships in Sydney, Australia. Players from eight nations across the world have been travelling to Australia over the past month and set about readying their forces for the upcoming tournament. Polo ponies have also been making lengthy journeys across the continent to take part in the matches. Approximately 250 ponies have travelled the length and breadth of the country to show their speed and ability on the world stage.

Polo Titans La Dolfina Win Again

It’s five years on the trot the 40 goal giants

After one of the most controversial beginnings to an Argentine tournament in recent history, the sun shone brightly on Palermo Ground 1 for the Final of the Tortugas Open Final. Last week, the AAP took the decision to move the Final of the tournament to Palermo, from its usual home Tortugas Polo Club, after a series of match cancellations due to poor weather. Coincidentally, the Semi Finals were cancelled due to rain, but the AAP and Tortugas agreed to end the tournament on the scheduled date, taking the teams’ points into account. 7,000 people turned up at the Buenos Aires home of polo to watch the two teams of titans take to the field.

After an exceedingly close first chukka, ending 1-1, La Dolfina stepped up a gear outplaying and outscoring the Ellerstina side. Wherever Ellerstina gave an inch, La Dolfina took a mile, racking up goal after goal, proving that their game plan was watertight. As the final bell sounded in the seventh chukka, the roar went up from the La Dolfina lines as their team rode home with a 12-5 win. This win marked the fifth consecutive Tortugas win for Cambiaso’s team and a milestone for Pablo MacDonough, who lifted the enormous silver trophy for the tenth time. He is now only one title away from Alberto Heguy’s record 11 wins. Cambiaso’s CloneCuartetera 05 was awarded the Best Playing Pony Award.

La Dolfina has started the Argentine season with a bang, winning the San Jorge Open, the Jockey Club Open and now the Tortugas. With the Hurlingham Open having started this weekend, the teams will now turn their attention to the second instalment of the 2017 Triple Crown. In 2016, Ellerstina came out victorious, beating La Dolfina in the final throws of the match. Perhaps they can repeat the triumph this year?
